Deaf awareness week: Are you hearing their voice?

£0.00

This talk will allow attendees to delve into the many faceted world of the Deaf Community and Deaf Arts and their rich cultural heritage.

We will then examine some startling statistical facts around Deafness and how many of us know very little about the Deaf Community or Sign Language, until we meet other Deaf people that sign or are part of this rich, diverse minority culture.

We will show a powerful film about the experiences of a Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) user and her experiences with lipreading. Discussion will follow around the challenges faced by Deaf people who lipread and how we can all play our part in becoming more aware of how we can support them to overcome these challenges in everyday life.

We will then share our top 10 Deaf Awareness Tips for Deaf Awareness within the workplace, exploring further how we can become Deaf Friendly supportive workplaces, that embrace employment of Deaf people.

We will finish by looking at recent legislation and how that is changing accessibility for BSL users in the future in the world of work and end with some real-life comments by Deaf people and how they feel.

This will lead to us asking if those watching today are now ready to fully support and implement Deaf Awareness, avoiding tokenistic gestures, by fully understanding their needs in the workplace at all levels.
