May 17: The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) is observed annually on May 17 and raises awareness of discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
The day highlights the importance of inclusion, equality and the ongoing need to challenge prejudice in all its forms.
What is the IDAHOBIT?
IDAHOBIT is a global awareness day that focuses on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other LGBTQ+ individuals. The observance was created in 2004 and was originally called the “International Day Against Homophobia” (IDAHO). Over time, the name expanded to include biphobia and transphobia. It is observed on May 17 because on this day in 1990, the World Health Organization officially removed homosexuality from its International Classification of Diseases. This decision was considered a major step toward reducing the medical stigmatization of LGBTQ+ people worldwide. Today IDAHOBIT aims to combat discrimination and hate, promote equality and human rights, support LGBTQ+ visibility and inclusion, raise awareness about violence and legal inequalities and encourage social and political change.
Why LGBTQ+ Inclusion Matters
Inclusive environments allow people to feel safe, respected and able to be themselves without fear of judgement or discrimination.
For many LGBTQ+ individuals, workplace culture and societal attitudes can significantly impact wellbeing, safety and opportunity.
IDAHOBIT encourages reflection on how language, policies and behaviours contribute to inclusion or exclusion in everyday life.
Ways to Mark the Day
There are several ways to engage with IDAHOBIT meaningfully:
Share educational resources on LGBTQ+ inclusion
Encourage conversations around allyship and respectful language
Review workplace inclusion policies and practices
Amplify LGBTQ+ voices and experiences
Promote safe and supportive environments for all
Creating Lasting Inclusion
IDAHOBIT is not only about awareness on a single day, but about encouraging ongoing commitment to equality and respect.
Through education, allyship and inclusive action, we can help create environments where everyone feels valued and able to belong.
