May 15: International Day of Families

International Day of Families

The International Day of Families is observed annually on May 15 and highlights the importance of families in shaping societies, communities and individual wellbeing.

The day encourages reflection on the many different forms families can take and the role supportive environments play in helping people thrive both personally and professionally.

What is the International Day of Families?

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family. As part of this effort, the UN also established May 15 as International Day of Families. Today aims to recognize the importance of families as fundamental social units, promote awareness of issues affecting family wellbeing, encourage policies that support families and highlight the role families play in education, health, and community development.

Today also highlights the importance of social policies and workplace practices that support family wellbeing and inclusion.

It is an opportunity to recognise that everyone’s family experience is unique, shaped by culture, identity, circumstance and personal relationships.

Why Family Inclusion Matters

Inclusive environments acknowledge that employees and individuals have diverse responsibilities and support systems outside of work.

Caregiving responsibilities, parenting, elder care and chosen family structures all play a role in people’s daily lives and can influence their needs within workplaces and communities.

Creating inclusive cultures means recognising these differences and supporting people through flexibility, understanding and equitable policies.

Ways to Mark the Day

There are many meaningful ways organisations and individuals can engage with this observance:

  • Reflect on family-friendly workplace policies

  • Encourage conversations around flexible working and care responsibilities

  • Recognise different family structures and lived experiences

  • Share resources that support work-life balance and wellbeing

  • Promote inclusive language around families and relationships

Building Inclusive Support Systems

The International Day of Families is a reminder that inclusion extends beyond the workplace and into everyday life.

When people feel supported in their roles as parents, carers and family members, they are more likely to feel valued, engaged and able to contribute fully.
