Keep Going, You’re Not Alone - Rethinking Resilience At Work

Keep Going, But Not Alone: Rethinking Resilience in the Workplace

What does it really mean to be resilient when the challenge isn't just personal, but systemic?

For many people from marginalised backgrounds, resilience has been an essential survival tool: the ability to navigate bias, discrimination, exclusion and the everyday experience of being "othered" while continuing to show up and succeed.

But there is a danger in celebrating resilience without asking why some people are required to be more resilient than others.

This session is for anyone who's ever had to be the resilient one, and for anyone in a position to make that less necessary.

We will explore the tension between individual resilience and organisational responsibility, and we will consider how resilience can empower us to keep moving forward while also recognising that people should not have to endlessly adapt to environments that could—and should—change.

We will take a positive look at the progress that has been made, while acknowledging that progress is rarely linear and equity has not yet been achieved.

Through an interactive talk and discussion, participants will explore:

What resilience really means—and what it doesn't.

The hidden cost of constantly having to "bounce back."

How minority stress can affect our energy, confidence and sense of belonging.

The difference between asking individuals to be resilient and creating resilient organisations.

How to recognise progress without pretending the work is finished.

What individuals can do to protect their energy and maintain hope.

What colleagues, leaders and organisations can do to reduce the burden placed on marginalised people.

Attendees will leave with a renewed understanding that resilience isn't just about how well we withstand difficult circumstances; it's also about creating circumstances that require less resilience to survive.
