September 7: Weekly Reflection - Where Do You Feel Most Like Yourself?
Weekly Reflection: Where Do You Feel Most Like Yourself?
Monday often brings with it a sense of starting again. A new week, a fresh list of things to do and, before we know it, our attention can be focused on everything that needs our time, energy and attention.
But today is an opportunity to take a moment to think about where we feel most like ourselves.
For all of us, there are certain people, places and moments where we seem to breathe a little more easily. It might be sitting around the kitchen table with people who know us well, laughing with a particular friend, walking somewhere familiar, getting lost in a hobby or simply having some quiet time where nobody needs anything from us.
It might also be somewhere unexpected. Perhaps it is at work, with colleagues who make you feel valued and comfortable enough to share your ideas. Perhaps it is in a community where you feel accepted, or somewhere that allows you to express a part of yourself that doesn't always have much space elsewhere. What these moments often have in common is that we aren't spending our energy wondering whether we are enough, whether we fit in or whether we are being judged. We can simply be ourselves.
That feeling is at the heart of belonging.
When we feel genuinely accepted, we don't necessarily have to change the way we speak, behave or express ourselves in order to feel comfortable. We can have different opinions, make mistakes, be quiet when we need to be quiet and enthusiastic when we want to be enthusiastic. We can bring more of our whole selves into the space.
So, as this new week begins, take a little time to reflect on the places and people that give you that feeling. Where do you feel able to relax and be yourself? Who makes you feel accepted without asking you to be anything other than who you are? What is it about those relationships, spaces or experiences that helps you feel that way?
And then, think about how you can help create that feeling for somebody else.
Because belonging isn't only about finding the places where we feel comfortable. It is also about helping to create spaces where other people can feel comfortable too. Sometimes that might mean inviting someone into a conversation, listening to an idea that is different from our own, noticing when someone seems uncomfortable or simply making the effort to let someone know that their presence is valued.
We don't always know what other people are carrying with them when they walk into a room, join a meeting or begin a new week. A small moment of warmth or acceptance might mean much more than we realise.
So this Monday, alongside everything else on your list, give yourself a little space to consider where you feel most like yourself — and what you can do to help others feel that way too.
Because when people feel safe enough to be themselves, belonging becomes something we don't just talk about, it becomes something we experience.
