May 10: Mother’s Day (International Observance)

Mother’s Day (International Observance)

During May, many countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day, recognising the role of mothers and female carers.

While traditions and celebrations vary globally, the observance also creates an opportunity to reflect on the importance of supporting mothers and female carers inside and outside the workplace.

Recognising Different Experiences

Family structures and caregiving responsibilities look different for everyone.

For many women, balancing work, care responsibilities and personal wellbeing can present both challenges and opportunities.

Inclusive workplaces help support employees by recognising these different experiences and creating environments where flexibility, understanding and wellbeing are valued.

Why Inclusion Matters

Conversations around parenthood and caregiving are closely connected to inclusion, accessibility and workplace equity.

Supportive policies, flexible working arrangements and understanding workplace cultures can make a meaningful difference to employees navigating caregiving responsibilities.

The observance also encourages recognition of the many forms family and care can take across different communities and cultures.

Ways to Acknowledge the Day

Workplaces and individuals can mark the observance by:

  • Recognising mothers, female carers and support networks

  • Reviewing family-friendly workplace policies

  • Encouraging conversations around flexible working

  • Sharing wellbeing and support resources

  • Celebrating different family experiences and structures
