June 8: Aprons On, Screens Off!
Screens Down, Spoons Up!
There is something special about creating food together.
Whether it's baking biscuits, decorating cupcakes, making sandwiches or helping prepare a family meal, cooking with an adult offers children the chance to learn new skills, express their creativity and enjoy quality time away from screens.
The kitchen can become a place for exploration and discovery. Children can measure, mix, stir, decorate and explore new flavours. Every recipe offers opportunities to ask questions, make choices and try things.
A Place for Everyone to Get Involved
One of the great things about cooking is that there are so many ways to take part.
Some children may enjoy carefully following a recipe, while others might prefer decorating, choosing ingredients or helping to set the table. Activities can easily be adapted to suit different ages, abilities, and interests, helping everyone feel included and involved.
Cooking together can also encourage communication and teamwork as children and adults work towards a shared goal.
Learning Through Doing
Many of the skills children develop in the kitchen extend far beyond cooking itself.
As they follow instructions, solve problems, and make decisions, they are building confidence and independence. Even when things don't go exactly as planned, there are opportunities to learn, adapt, and keep going.
Most importantly, children learn that making mistakes is a natural part of learning something new.
More Than a Finished Recipe
While the end result might be a tasty treat or a delicious meal, there’s huge value in the experience itself.
The conversations around the kitchen table, the laughter during a messy mixing session and the sense of achievement when everyone enjoys something they've helped create can be just as rewarding as the food.
Screen-Free Childhood Month is all about making time for meaningful experiences away from digital devices. Cooking together is a simple activity that brings people together, celebrates different strengths and creates memories that can last long after the last bite has been enjoyed.
So, grab an apron, choose a recipe (or go without!) and see what you can create together!
