June 29: Time For Reflection
Looking Back: What Changed When Screens Took a Back Seat?
Over the past few weeks, you've encouraged your teenagers to try all sorts of screen-free challenges.
They've gone for walks, watched sunsets, started new hobbies, spent time reading, enjoyed phone-free mornings, tried self-care evenings and hopefully discovered a few new ways to spend their time away from a screen.
Today's challenge is about taking a moment to look back and reflect. How did spending less time on screens affect their mood? Did they notice any changes in their sleep? Did they feel calmer, more focused, more connected or perhaps more bored at first?
There are no right or wrong answers it’s about taking time to notice what happened.
Sometimes We Don't Notice Changes Until We Stop and Think
Teenagers live in a world where screens are woven into everyday life. They use them to learn, socialise, relax, communicate, create and entertain themselves. For many young people, screens are so normal that it's difficult to imagine life without them. That means the effects of spending less time online can sometimes be subtle but still noticeable if you take the time to reflect - perhaps they fell asleep a little faster, maybe they felt less rushed in the evenings, perhaps they found themselves talking more with family or maybe they spent time on hobbies they had forgotten they enjoyed.
Reflecting Without Judging - “We Listen and We Don’t Judge”
One of the most important things we as parents can do during this challenge is encourage curiosity. The aim is to help them become more aware of how different habits affect them.
Helping teenagers explore what made them feel more relaced or connected, what online moments didn’t they miss at all. These questions encourage self-awareness which is a really valuable life skill.
As parents, it can be tempting to focus on outcomes but awareness matters too.
When teenagers understand how certain habits affect their mood, energy and wellbeing they're better equipped to make choices for themselves in the future.
That awareness will serve them far longer than any month-long challenge ever could.
Taking the Best Bits Forward
After creating opportunities to pause, reconnect and discover is your teenager wondering what else might be possible. Maybe your teenager wants to keep their phone-free mornings, maybe they enjoyed reading before bed, perhaps they've discovered a new hobby, a favourite walking route, or simply the benefits of putting their phone down every now and then.
The goal was balance a now is the time to stop for a moment and look back.
