June 23: Switch Off, Wind Down
Switch Off to Wind Down
Teenagers are often some of the busiest people in the house. Between school, homework, hobbies, friendships, family commitments and the constant flow of messages, videos and social media updates, their days rarely seem to slow down. When the evening arrives, many young people remain on screens right up until the moment they try to fall asleep.
That's why today's challenge is to spend an evening without screens after 8 PM. A chance to slow the pace of the day and give both mind and body an opportunity to switch off.
For parents, this is about helping teenagers discover how different an evening can feel when screens aren't competing for their attention.
The Day Doesn't End When School Does
Many parents notice that although the school day finishes mid afternoon, their teenager's brain often doesn't get a break. Notifications continue arriving, conversations from the school day carry on in messages, videos lead to more videos - one quick check of a phone can easily turn into an hour without anyone noticing.
The result is that many teenagers move from one form of stimulation to another, leaving very little time for their minds to slow down. A screen-free evening creates a natural pause. It provides space to read, listen to music, chat with family, take a bath, work on a hobby, journal, draw or simply relax.
Sleep Starts Before Bedtime
When we think about sleep, we often focus on what happens when our heads hit the pillow but in reality, good sleep begins much earlier. Our brains and bodies need time to recognise that the day is coming to an end but constant notifications, fast-moving content and endless scrolling can make it harder to make that transition. Even when teenagers feel physically tired, their minds may still be busy processing everything they've just watched, read or responded to.
Creating a screen-free period before bed helps establish a gentler rhythm. It signals that the day is slowing down and creates space for relaxation. It often makes falling asleep easier and sleep quality better.
Making Evenings Feel Different
A screen-free evening doesn't just affect bedtime, it changes the atmosphere of the whole evening. Conversations last longer with everyone becoming more present. Memories that had been forgotten reappear, board games emerge from cupboards, books are picked up, music is played, fun is found.
It Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
For some teenagers, switching off screens after 8 PM will feel easy and for others, it may feel almost impossible. If your teen is struggling ask them to focus on the things they notice when they put their screens down. Do they feel more relaxed, how did they sleep, what happened when they didn’t respond to a notification or message immediately? The awareness of how these small changes feel can be the start of finding the joy in those chosen times.
A Small Change Worth Trying
Technology plays an important role in young people's lives, helping them learn, connect and express themselves but balance matters.
A screen-free evening isn't about making teenagers miss out, it's about creating space for something else. A little more calm, more rest and more connection.
So tonight, try switching off after 8 PM and see what happens it might be exactly what you and your teenager need.
