June 2: How Building Dens Creates Connection, Creativity, and Screen-Free Joy

How Building Dens Creates Connection, Creativity, and Screen-Free Joy

Screen-free activities allow children to engage with the world around them differently. Rather than passively consuming content, they become active creators, problem-solvers, storytellers, and collaborators.

Building a den encourages:

  • Creativity and imagination

  • Communication and teamwork

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Independent thinking

  • Comfort and relaxation

For many children, dens can also become calming spaces where they feel safe and secure. Some turn them into reading corners, quiet spaces, adventure hideouts, or imaginative worlds inspired by stories and games.

Importantly, screen-free play does not need to be expensive or highly structured. A few blankets and cushions can create hours of engagement and fun.

Creating Inclusive Play Spaces

Activities like den building can also support inclusion and belonging. Children from different backgrounds, experiences, and abilities can take part in ways that feel comfortable and accessible to them.

Some children may enjoy physically building the fort, while others may prefer decorating it, choosing stories to read inside, or creating imaginative games. Offering flexibility allows children to participate in ways that reflect their interests, confidence levels, and individual needs.

Simple activities often create the best opportunities for connection because there is no single “right” way to participate.

Encouraging Connection at Home and in School

Pillow forts and dens can easily be adapted for different environments and age groups.

At home, families might use the space for reading together, quiet time before bed, arts and crafts, family storytelling, board games or puzzles.

In schools or community settings, dens can become, calm corners, reading zones, sensory-friendly spaces, group storytelling areas or creative learning environments.

These shared offline moments can help strengthen relationships, encourage communication, and create positive memories away from digital distractions.

Small Activities, Big Impact

Screen-free living does not need to involve strict rules or removing technology completely. Instead, it is about creating balance and making room for creativity, wellbeing, and connection.

Activities like building a pillow fort remind us that some of the most valuable experiences are often the simplest. With a little imagination and a few household items, children can create a place that supports play, comfort, learning, and belonging.

Try building a den this week and encourage children to make it their own — whether it becomes a castle, spaceship, reading nook, or a quiet retreat.
