August 1: Supporting Parents Through The Summer Holidays
You Matter Too: Supporting Parents Through the Summer Holidays
The summer holidays often arrive with a mixture of excitement and expectation. For children, they represent six weeks of freedom, adventure and memories waiting to be made. For parents and carers they can also bring the reality of balancing work with childcare, managing household finances, planning activities, keeping children entertained, navigating changing routines and trying to find a little time to breathe. It can quickly turn what should feel like a season of rest into one of the busiest times of the year. At the same time, it's easy to feel as though everyone else is doing it better.
Social media fills our screens with family holidays, beautifully organised picnics, exciting day trips and smiling children enjoying endless adventures. It can leave us wondering whether we're doing enough, creating enough memories or making the most of every precious day. The truth is that behind almost every photograph is a family facing many of the same challenges, juggling many of the same responsibilities and trying, just like you, to do their very best.
Throughout July, we explored the many influences shaping our children's lives and reflected on how we can help them grow into kind, resilient and compassionate people. As we move into August, we'd like to shift the focus slightly because the wellbeing of children and the wellbeing of parents are deeply connected.
Children thrive when the adults around them feel supported, valued and able to care for themselves as well as others. Yet parents are often the last people to receive that care. We are quick to encourage others to rest, ask for help and protect their mental wellbeing, while quietly believing that we should simply keep going ourselves. This month is an invitation to challenge that way of thinking.
Over the coming weeks, we'll be talking honestly about the realities of family life during the summer holidays. We'll explore the pressure to create the "perfect" summer, the emotional and financial demands that many families face, the challenge of balancing work and home life, and the importance of making space for your own wellbeing without guilt. There won't be any promises of perfect parenting or endless lists of things you should be doing.
Instead, we hope this series feels like a reassuring reminder that you are already doing more than you probably give yourself credit for, and that looking after yourself is not something that takes away from your children. If, by the end of this month, you feel a little less guilty, a little more confident and a little more able to enjoy the ordinary moments that make family life so special, then we will have achieved exactly what we hoped. Because summer doesn't have to be filled with expensive days out or perfectly planned adventures to be meaningful.
Sometimes the memories that stay with our children are created in the simplest of moments: sharing an ice cream on a park bench, laughing together over a board game, chatting in the garden as the sun begins to set or simply knowing that home is a place where everyone feels loved, accepted and safe.
So, wherever this summer finds you, whether you're working, staying at home, counting every penny, planning exciting adventures or simply taking each day as it comes, we're so glad you're here.
This month is for every parent who has ever wondered if they're doing enough, who is quietly carrying more than anyone else realises. And, above all, it is a reminder that you matter too.
