April 6: Moving Together, Building Change
International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
Observed each year on April 6, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace celebrates the powerful role sport plays in bringing people together and creating positive change. Across the world, sport continues to break down barriers, connect communities and promote a sense of unity that goes beyond the playing field.
More than just physical activity, sport can be a universal language. It has the ability to support education, improve mental and physical well-being, and foster values such as teamwork, respect and inclusion. At varying levels, sport can create opportunities and open doors for people of all ages and backgrounds.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 and has been observed annually since 2014. Its date marks the anniversary of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896—an event that symbolised international unity and peaceful competition.
Around the world, organisations and communities use sport as a tool to address social challenges, from inequality and exclusion to health and well-being.
To mark the day you could take part in a local sporting activity, support inclusive programmes, or encourage fair play and teamwork. Sharing stories and initiatives that highlight sport’s positive influence can also help inspire others.
Awareness days like this remind us that everyday activities can have a deeper purpose. Sport is not only about competition or performance—it’s also about connection, growth and community. By recognising this day, we celebrate the role sport plays in building a more inclusive, healthy and peaceful world.
